Launch of ‘ABHAY’

Context:

The Indian Navy’s seventh Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), named ‘Abhay,’ was launched at L&T’s Kattupalli facility, near Chennai.

The original INS Abhay, commissioned in 1989 and the first of its class, remains the last active vessel of the Abhay-class. After 35 years of service, it is also set for decommissioning, paving the way for the new ASW platforms equipped to handle modern subsurface threats.

Project Overview:

  • Abhay was officially launched on October 25, 2024.
  • Contract: Part of a 2019 agreement between the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE).
    • A total of eight ASW SWC ships are to be constructed.
  • Class: Arnala-class ships, designed to replace the Abhay-class ASW corvettes.
  • Purpose: Conduct anti-submarine operations in coastal waters, Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO), and mine-laying activities.

Key Specifications and Features:

  • Dimensions: Each ship measures 77 metres in length and 10 metres in width.
  • The ASW SWCs can reach speeds of up to 25 knots, ensuring agility in tactical scenarios. Also has an operational endurance of 1,800 nautical miles.
  • Surveillance Capabilities: These vessels are equipped for comprehensive subsurface surveillance, capable of tracking various underwater and surface targets and conducting coordinated operations with aircraft.

Advanced Armament and Technology:

  • The Abhay class is outfitted with an advanced anti-submarine warfare suite, including:
  • Lightweight torpedoes, ASW rockets, and mines.
  • A 30 mm Close-in Weapon System (CIWS) and 12.7 mm Stabilised Remote-Control Guns for defence against aerial and surface threats.
  • Hull Mounted Sonar and Low-Frequency Variable Depth Sonar to enhance detection and engagement capabilities.

Strategic Importance:

  • Aatmanirbhar Bharat Initiative: The launch underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
    • Over 80% indigenous content in the ASW SWC ships, promoting local manufacturing and job creation.
    • This initiative aims to bolster local manufacturing capabilities, generate employment, and enhance defence production within India.
