Context:
World Sparrow Day is celebrated annually on March 20th to raise awareness about the declining population of sparrows, especially the house sparrow.
Background
- It was initiated in 2010 by the Nature Forever organisation, with the aim to highlight the importance of sparrows in maintaining ecological balance and to encourage efforts to protect them.
- The event has spread to over 50 countries and has grown in significance over the years, with Delhi declaring the house sparrow as its state bird in 2012.

- Koodugal Trust (Chennai): Involving school children in building sparrow nests, this initiative has successfully constructed over 10,000 nests from 2020 to 2024, contributing to a rise in sparrow numbers.
- “Early Bird” Campaign (Mysuru): This educational program introduces children to birds and sparrow conservation, including library activities, kits, and field trips to observe birds, helping foster a sense of responsibility for nature.
- Brij Lal’s Efforts in Mysuru: Rajya Sabha MP Brij Lal has set up 50 nests at his home for sparrows, where they return annually to lay their eggs. His efforts have been praised by PM Modi, highlighting the importance of such grassroots conservation work.
