The Ministry of Women & Child Development has consolidated all schemes aimed at improving the welfare of children into three schemes for better implementation and efficient monitoring.

The three schemes clubbed by the Ministry are:
- Saksham Anganwadi Poshan 2.0 for improving nutrition and health indicators in the country
- Mission Shakti for safety, protection and empowerment of women and
- Mission Vatsalya for protection, care and welfare of children in difficult circumstances.
About Mission Vatsalya:
- Mission Vatsalya scheme is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) which is implemented through States/Union Territories (UTs).
- The fund-sharing pattern is in the ratio of 60:40 and 90:10(Hilly states).
- The aim is to deliver services for Children in Need of Care and Protection (CNCP) and Children in Conflict with the Law (CCL), which includes two components, namely. Institutional Care: Under the scheme Institutional Care is provided through Child Care Institutes (CCIs), as a rehabilitative measure.
- The programmes and activities in Homes include, inter alia, age-appropriate education, access to vocational training, recreation, health care, counselling, etc.
- Non-institutional care: The Non-Institutional Care component extends support for Adoption, Foster Care, Aftercare, and Sponsorship. After-care services are provided for children after the age of 18 to help sustain them during the transition from institutional to independent life.
- The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 provides the foundational framework for the implementation of the Mission.
- JJ ACT is the primary law for the care and protection of children in the country.
