Agreement between India and Taiwan for Organic Products

About: The Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) for organic products between India and Taiwan was implemented on 8 July 2024. 

 

About the Agreement 

  • Implementing Agencies for the MRA are Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • MRA between India and Taiwan is a landmark achievement as it is the first bilateral agreement for organic products.
  • Under this agreement, NPOP-certified organic products can be sold in Taiwan with the “India Organic” logo, and Taiwan-certified organic products can be sold in India with the “Taiwan Organic” logo.
  • The mutual recognition agreement will simplify organic product exports by avoiding dual certifications, reducing compliance costs, and enhancing trade opportunities. 
  • It will also facilitate the export of major Indian organic products like rice, processed food, tea, and medicinal plant products to Taiwan.

 

 

 

 

 

Organic Farming

  • Organic farming is a sustainable agriculture system that excludes the use of synthetic inputs in farming and relies on on-farm inputs such as crop residues, farmyard manure, enriched composts, vermi-compost, oil cakes, bio-fertilizers etc for nutrient management of crops.

 

 

 

 

  • Madya Pradesh has the largest area under organic certification while Sikkim is the first organic state in India .
  • According to the joint study of ASSOCHAM –EY, the domestic organic market is growing @ 17%
  • Food safety and standard Authority of India (FSSAI) regulates organic food in India under which there are 2 systems for certification.
  • NPOP certified products can be traded in export and in the domestic market including imports, PGS certified product can be traded only in the domestic market.
