India is celebrating National Broadcasting Day  on July 23 to commemorate the beginning of radio broadcasting in the country and to acknowledge the role of radio in communication, entertainment, and education.

History and Significance:

  • Origins: Began in June 1923 with Radio Club of Bombay; Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC) established on July 23, 1927.
  • All India Radio (AIR): Founded in 1936, evolved from the Indian State Broadcasting Service, renamed “Akashvani” in 1956, now operates 591 stations in 23 languages and 146 dialects.
    • Motto – ‘Bahujan Hitaya : Bahujan Sukhaya’.
    • One of the largest broadcasting organisations in the world in terms of the number of languages of broadcast and the spectrum of socio-economic and cultural diversity it serves
  • Impact: Played a key role in independence, literacy, health, and agricultural awareness.

National Broadcasting Policy, 2024:

  • TRAI issued a pre-consultation paper in September 2023, gathering submissions and holding nationwide meetings through late 2023 and early 2024.
