Context:

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) successfully concluded the first phase of its longitudinal health monitoring project, ‘Phenome India-CSIR Health Cohort Knowledgebase’ (PI-CHeCK).

About Phenome India project

  • Objective: To develop risk prediction tools and contribute to precision health and medicine for the Indian population.
  • Scope: The study focuses on non-communicable (cardio-metabolic) diseases, including diabetes, liver diseases, and cardiac conditions.
  • Sample Collection: Nearly 10,000 participants, including CSIR employees, pensioners, and their spouses from 17 states and 24 cities, have volunteered to provide comprehensive health data.
    • This data encompasses:
      • Clinical questionnaires
      • Lifestyle and dietary habits
      • Anthropometric measurements
      • Imaging/scanning data
      • Extensive biochemical and molecular data

 

  • Significance:
    • India-Specific Insights: The study addresses the need for India-specific risk prediction algorithms due to ethnic diversity and varied genetic and lifestyle factors.
    • Precision Medicine: Emphasises Predictive, Personalised, Participatory, and Preventive healthcare.
    • Standard Operating Procedures: CSIR has developed cost-effective methods for sample collection, encouraging other organisations to contribute to large-scale data collection.

 

  • Future Goals:
    • Extensive Sample Collection: Aims to collect up to 1 lakh or 10 lakh samples for more accurate and comprehensive risk assessment.
    • Nationwide Initiatives: Encourages similar health monitoring projects across India to improve the accuracy and representation of risk prediction algorithms.
