Jatindranath Mukherjee

About:

  • Jatindranath Mukherjee, popularly known as Bagha Jatin, was a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement, born on December 7, 1879, in Kushtia, Bengal (now Bangladesh). 
  • He is celebrated for his bravery and revolutionary spirit, which significantly contributed to the struggle against British colonial rule in India.

 

Early Life and Influences:

  • Jatin grew up in a well-to-do family and was influenced by his mother, a social worker and poet, who instilled in him the values of self-respect and courage
  • His early education took place in Bagnan High School, where he became involved in revolutionary activities
  • A pivotal moment in his life was his meeting with Sri Aurobindo in 1903, which inspired him to dedicate himself to the cause of Indian independence. 
  • He became a key member of the Anushilan Samiti, a group focused on militant nationalism and revolutionary activities against British rule.

 

Revolutionary Activities:

  • Jatin Mukherjee was a founding member of the Jugantar Party, which aimed to organise armed resistance against the British. 
  • Under his leadership, Jugantar expanded its network across India and even internationally, promoting revolutionary activities and training youths in military skills, which prominent economist Sanjeev Sanyal has mentioned in his book, “Revolutionaries”.
  • Jatin was known for his strategic planning and execution of several daring operations against British officials, which included bank robberies and assassination attempts aimed at high-ranking officials.
  • One of his significant contributions was during the Alipore Bomb Case, where he took over the leadership of Jugantar and revitalised its operations after many members were arrested. 

 

The Battle of Balasore and Legacy:

  • Jatin’s most notable act of bravery was his fighting against British police forces during the Battle of Balasore in 1915
  • He sustained severe injuries during this confrontation and ultimately succumbed to his wounds on September 10, 1915
  • His death marked him as a martyr in the eyes of many and solidified his legacy as a symbol of resistance against oppression.
  • Jatindranath Mukherjee’s contributions to the Indian freedom struggle were characterised by his fierce patriotism, innovative, revolutionary warfare tactics, and vision for a free and prosperous India. 
  • He is remembered not only for his actions but also for inspiring future generations of freedom fighters, including figures like Subhas Chandra Bose
