National Testing Agency (NTA) Under Fire for High Cut-Offs and Grace Marks: Concerns Over Fairness and Transparency in Entrance Exams.

  • In the medical entrance exam NEET (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test) 2024 a record of 67 candidates bagged the top rank.
  • The plea has been filed over awarding grace marks to candidates.

 

About the National Testing Agency (NTA):

  • Registered as a society under the Societies (Registration) Act, 1860.
  • It is an autonomous and self-sustained premier testing organisation to conducts entrance examinations for admission/fellowship in higher educational institutions.
  • As per the rules and regulations of the NTA, the General Body, which decides policy matters, comprises 17 members who are educationists of repute and nominees of the Government both from the Centre and the State. 
    • In addition, the General Body will have Testing experts, representatives of Higher Educational Institutions, School Education Boards and officials of the NTA.
  • It is a self-sustained organisation. However, to set up and start its operations, a provision of Rs.25 crore as a one-time grant has been made.
  • The Director General of NTA, in the rank and pay equivalent to the Joint Secretary to the Government of India will be its Chief Executive Officer.
  • The director general shall be assisted by 9 verticals in the rank and pay equivalent to a Director in the Government of India, each spearheading 9 wings of NTA.
