Cyber Crime: A Crucial Aspect of National Security

Context:

The Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasised the critical importance of cybersecurity in national security during the first foundation day celebrations of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C).

More on News:

  • The Home Minister also launched four key initiatives under the I4C: the Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre (CFMC), the ‘Samanvaya’ platform, a cyber commandos program, and a suspect registry
  • These initiatives aim to strengthen the country’s cyber defences and provide a coordinated response to cybercrimes.

Key Highlights:

  • Central Suspect Registry: It will serve as a national database of known cyber criminals and suspects. This registry is intended to facilitate better coordination and information sharing among different states and law enforcement agencies.
  • It will help in tracking repeat offenders and preventing fraud by allowing banks, financial institutions, and police to access a unified list of suspects, improving the management of fraud risks.
  • Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre (CFMC): Aims to create a collaborative platform that brings together representatives from banks, financial institutions, telecom companies, and law enforcement agencies.
  • By integrating these entities, the CFMC will work to identify and counteract cyber fraud more effectively, leveraging collective expertise and resources to tackle online financial crimes.
  • Samanvaya Platform: This web-based platform is designed to be a comprehensive portal for data repository, sharing, and analytics related to cybercrime.
  • It will act as a central hub for crime mapping, data analysis, and coordination among law enforcement agencies across India, enhancing the effectiveness of cybercrime investigations and response.
  • Cyber Commandos Program: The program will establish a specialised wing of trained “Cyber Commandos” to address cybersecurity threats.
  • These commandos will be trained to support state and central agencies in securing the digital space, providing expertise in handling complex cyber threats and supporting cybercrime investigations.
  • Public Awareness Campaign: To educate the public about cybercrime prevention and the resources available for reporting and addressing cybercrimes.
  • The campaign will utilise multiple media channels, including TV, radio, cinema, and social media, to raise awareness about the 1930 helpline and other I4C initiatives.
