Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana

Context:

The Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana (TBSY), a flagship health initiative by Coal India Limited (CIL), has reached a significant milestone by completing 500 bone marrow transplants (BMTs).

This achievement marks a major step forward in the fight against Thalassemia Major and Aplastic Anaemia, providing hope and life-saving treatment to underprivileged children across India.

 

Key Highlights:

  • Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited (NLCIL) and its joint ventures have established 28 medical oxygen plants with a total capacity of 2,500 beds.
  • Across Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
  • NLCIL has improved healthcare access by setting up a dialysis centre at the government hospital in Cuddalore.
  • The ministry announced that Coal India and NLCIL are committed to community welfare with an annual corporate social responsibility (CSR) budget of approximately 800 crore rupees.

 

About TBSY:

  • Launched in 2017.
  • Objective: To support families with an annual income below ₹8 lakh by offering financial assistance of up to ₹10 lakh per patient for BMT procedures.
  • The program has already benefited 356 children, providing them with a chance at a healthier life.
  • Recognition: Received ‘The Green Environment Award’.
  • Application: Available through an online portal and physical applications.

Bone marrow transplant (BMT) 

  • BMT is a specialised treatment for individuals with specific cancers or other diseases. It involves extracting stem cells from the bone marrow, processing them, and then reinfusing them into the original donor or another recipient.
  • The procedure includes collecting bone marrow stem cells, filtering them, and reintroducing them either to the patient (donor) or to a different individual.
