Greenfield Major Port at Vadhavan

Context:

The Union Cabinet approved the development of Rs 76,200-crore all weather  greenfield major port at Vadhavan in Palghar District, Maharashtra.

 

More on News: 

  • Cabinet also approved establishing road connectivity between the Port and National Highways by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. 
  • Additionally, the Ministry of Railways will provide rail linkage to the existing rail network and the upcoming Dedicated Rail Freight Corridor.
  • The Project involves reclamation of 1,448 hectares of area in the sea and construction of 10.14 km of offshore breakwater and container/cargo storage areas.

Vadhavan Port: 

  • It will be developed by Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL) and Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) with a 74% and 26% shareholding respectively.
    • VPPL is an Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed by Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). 
  • It will include development of core infrastructure, terminals and other commercial infrastructure in public-private partnerships (PPP) mode.
  • The project will be located 130 km from Mumbai and 150 km from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, the country’s largest container port.
  • It will create a cumulative capacity of 298 million metric tonnes (MMT) per annum. 
    • This includes around 23.2 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalents) of container handling capacity.
  • It will comprise nine container terminals, each 1000 metres long, four multipurpose berths, including:
    • Coastal berth, four liquid cargo berths, a Ro-Ro berth, and a Coast Guard berth.
  • It is to be developed in two phases, first ending in 2030 and second ending in 2039.

 

Importance of the Project: 

  • This will aid Export-Import trade flow through IMEEC (India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor) and INSTC (International North South Transportation Corridor)
  • The world-class maritime terminal facilities promote PPPs and leverage efficiencies and modern technologies. 
  • This creates a state-of-the-art terminal capable of handling mainline mega vessels on international shipping lines.
  • Aligned with PM Gati Shakti Programme it aims to boost economic activity and local economies
  • It is expected to generate employment opportunities for 12 lakh people. 
  • It will help elevate India’s marine sector to be amongst the top 10 in the world.
