E-flow Monitoring System

Context:

The Union Jal Shakti Minister recently reviewed the progress of Namami Gange Mission projects in New Delhi. This crucial initiative aims to rejuvenate and conserve the sacred Ganga River.

Environmental Flows Monitoring System:

It refers to the water quantity needed to sustain a river’s ecosystem. This ensures enough water to support aquatic life, maintain water quality, and promote biodiversity.

  • Ensuring Sustainable Flow of Ganga: During the review, the E-Flows Monitoring System was launched.
    • Developed by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), this system is an integral part of the Aviral Ganga component. To ensure the continuous and sustainable flow of the Ganga River.
  • PRAYAG Portal: It is part of a real-time monitoring centre. It tracks various parameters related to the Ganga, including river water quality, project progress, and crucial data.
    • It encompasses online dashboards such as the Ganga Tarang Portal, Project Management Tool Dashboard, and the Ganga Districts Performance Monitoring System.
  • Monitoring Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs): The system monitors STPs through the Online Continuous Effluent Monitoring System (OCEMS). This ensures that all STPs operate at their rated capacity, contributing to cleaner river water.
  • River Water Quality Monitoring: The E-Flow Monitoring System assesses water quality at different locations along the Ganga, Yamuna, and their tributaries.
  • Data Utilisation: By utilising data from quarterly reports by the Central Water Commission, the system tracks in-flow, out-flow, and mandated E-flow across 11 projects along the Ganga main stream.
