e-Sankhyiki Portal

Context:

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) recently unveiled the e-Sankhyiki Portal, a significant step toward improving data accessibility and dissemination of official statistics in India.

What is the e-Sankhyiki Portal?

  • The Portal serves as a definitive source for comprehensive and reliable statistical data.
  • Objectives: The portal acts as a single point of access to all publicly available datasets from the Ministry.
  • Currently, it hosts approximately 2300 datasets, making it easier for data professionals, decision-makers, researchers, and the public to find, download, and share relevant data.
  • It includes modules for macro indicators, providing essential statistical insights for informed decision-making.
  • Key Features: The portal is designed with two primary modules:
  • Data Catalogue Module: It provides a detailed listing of the Ministry’s major data assets. Users can search and download various datasets, facilitating easy access to important statistical information.
  • Macro Indicators Module: This module offers time series data on macroeconomic indicators of four key products of this Ministry with features for filtering and visualising along with metadata.

Data Safety Measures:

  • Ensuring the security of data remains a top priority for MoSPI. Over the past three years, several key measures have been implemented to safeguard data:
  • Cloud Storage: Data is stored securely in the cloud facility provided by the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
  • Security Audits: Regular security audits of applications and the implementation of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocols have been conducted to protect domains.
  • Vulnerability Assessment: Ongoing assessments help identify and mitigate potential security vulnerabilities.
  • Compliance: The Ministry adheres to guidelines issued by various agencies, including NIC and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).

CERT-In Activities

  • CERT-In, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), plays a crucial role in enhancing data safety.
  • It includes the Issuance of Advisories and Guidelines, Sensitisation Programs,  Cyber Threat Exchange Platform, Cyber Swachhta Kendra, Cyber Crisis Management Plan, National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC), and Security Auditing Organisations.
