Context:
A few days after the Central Government launched its BioE3 policy to enhance biotechnology-driven manufacturing in India, the Department of Biotechnology is considering establishing enzyme-manufacturing facilities to support ethanol production.
BioE3 Policy
The Union Cabinet approved the ‘BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, and Employment) Policy for Fostering High-Performance Biomanufacturing’ proposed by the Department of Biotechnology.
Key Features:
- Innovation-Driven Support: Establishment of Biomanufacturing & Bio-AI hubs and Biofoundries is planned.
- Focus on Green Growth: The policy prioritises regenerative bioeconomy models to support green growth, expanding India’s skilled workforce and creating jobs.
- Government Initiatives Alignment: The policy aligns with existing government initiatives such as the ‘Net Zero’ carbon economy and ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ (LiFE).
