India Hosts ISO Council Meeting 2024

Context:

India is hosting a global event in the sugar sector ‘ISO Council Meeting’ in New Delhi. Delegates from more than 30 countries and representatives of many international organisations are joining to deliberate on critical issues of sugar and biofuel sector

 

More on news:

  • As the world’s largest consumer and second-largest producer of sugar, India has been nominated as the Chair for 2024.
  • 24 June 2024: International delegates will tour a grain-based distillery in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, showcasing India’s technological advancements in biofuel production.
  • 25 June 2024: A workshop titled “Sugar and Biofuels – Emerging Vistas” will be held at Bharat Mandapam. 
    • It aims to strengthen the Global Biofuel Alliance, an initiative by the Prime Minister, promoting sustainable biofuel development and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

About Global Biofuel Alliance:

  • It is a Multi-stakeholder alliance of Governments, International Organizations, and Industries.
  • Initiative by India as part of its G20 Chairmanship to unite major biofuel consumers and producers and promote biofuels as essential for energy transition.
  • It enhances India’s global standing and drives domestic economic and energy benefits.

About the International Sugar Organisation (ISO)

  • UN Affiliated Body: Headquarters in London, with about 85 member countries covering almost 90% of global sugar production.
  • Mandate: To bring together major sugar-producing, consuming, and trading nations to foster mutual understanding and progressive approaches to sugar sector issues.
  • Focus on Biofuels: Particularly ethanol, with sugarcane being a major feedstock for ethanol production.

  • The government has achieved 10% average ethanol blending in petrol under the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme in June 2022.
  • Set a target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol by the Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2025-26.
