Key Initiatives to Boost Nutrition Support for TB Patients 

Context:

The Union Home Minister has increased the monthly support under the Ni-Kshay Poshan Yojana and expanded the scope of The Ni-Kshay Mitra program.Both Initiatives are part of Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, aiming for a TB-free India by 2025.

Ni- Kshay Poshan Abhiyaan:

  • Increased Monthly Support for TB Patients: The monthly support under the Ni-Kshay Poshan Yojana has been increased from ₹500 to ₹1,000 per month for all TB patients, providing financial aid for the entire duration of their treatment.
  • Progress under Ni-Kshay Poshan Yojana:To date, ₹3,202 crores have been disbursed to 1.13 crore beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer under the Ni-Kshay Poshan Yojana.

 

Ni-Kshay Poshan Abhiyaan:

  • Objective: The Ni-Kshay Poshan Abhiyaan focuses on providing nutritional support specifically to TB patients.
  • Key Features:
  • Under this program, all TB patients are entitled to a monthly nutritional allowance of ₹1000, which is transferred directly to their bank accounts.
  • Recognizes that malnutrition can exacerbate the condition and recovery of TB patients, and aims to ensure patients have access to adequate nutrition during treatment.

 

Ni-Kshay Mitra Initiative:

  • Expansion of Ni-Kshay Mitra Initiative: The Ni-Kshay Mitra program will expand its scope to include family members of TB patients, with the adoption of household contacts for food basket distribution, improving immunity and treatment outcomes.
  • Assessment of Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Yojana has revealed that tuberculosis patients with Ni-kshay Mitra support recorded a 95% successful treatment outcome, compared to 90% for those without one.

 

  • The Ni-KSHAY Mitra Initiative  for Private Sector scheme is a Government of India initiative to incentivize private sector healthcare providers for notifying tuberculosis (TB) cases to the government.
  • The initiative encourages individuals, institutions, and organisations to become “Ni-Kshay Mitras” (benefactors) by adopting TB patients. 
  • The focus is on providing support beyond medical treatment, helping with nutritional, vocational, or even psychological assistance.
  • The scheme was launched in 2018 and is implemented by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • All notified TB patients are beneficiaries of the scheme. 

 

The Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan:

It is a comprehensive campaign launched by the Government of India to eliminate tuberculosis (TB) from the country by 2025, five years ahead of the global target of 2030. The initiative focuses on strengthening India’s fight against TB through a multi-pronged approach, integrating prevention, detection, treatment, and public awareness.
