  • The Maritime Exercise Malabar 2024 will take place from October 8 to 18, 2024, starting with a Harbour Phase in Visakhapatnam, followed by a Sea Phase.

  • A Distinguished Visitors’ Day is scheduled for October 9, 2024, during the Harbour Phase, where delegations from all nations will be hosted by the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command.
  • A Joint Press Conference co-chaired by the heads of delegations will take place as part of the Harbour Phase activities.

 

Background of Exercise Malabar

  • Initiated in 1992 as a bilateral naval drill between the United States and the Indian Navy, Exercise Malabar has evolved into a significant multilateral event.
  • Its primary goals are to enhance interoperability, foster mutual understanding, and address shared maritime challenges in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific region.

 

Participants and Assets:

  • India: Various platforms including guided missile destroyers, multi-purpose frigates, submarines, fixed-wing maritime reconnaissance aircraft, fighter jets, and helicopters.
  • Australia: HMAS Stuart, an Anzac Class Frigate, accompanied by its MH-60R helicopter and P-8 Maritime Patrol Aircraft.
  • United States: USS Dewey, an Arleigh Burke-Class Destroyer, equipped with an integral helicopter and P-8 Maritime Patrol Aircraft.
  • Japan: JS Ariake, a Murasame-class Destroyer.
  • Special forces from all four nations will participate, enhancing the exercise’s scope and complexity.

  • Special Operations: Discussions on tactics and strategies will be held through Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEE).
  • Maritime Operations: The exercise will encompass complex operations including anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, and air defence exercises designed to improve situational awareness in maritime environments.
