About the Event of National Statistics Day 2024:

 

World Statistics Day:

  • World Statistics Day, is a UN-designated observance celebrated every five years on October 20th.

 

  • National Statistics Day in India is celebrated on 29th June.
  • Theme for 2024:“Use of data for decision making “The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) launched the portal eSankhyiki on the occasion.
  • Objective is to establish a comprehensive data management and sharing system for ease of dissemination of official statistics in the country. 
  • Following three reports were released during the event:
    • Sustainable Development Goals – National Indicator Framework Progress Report, 2024’
    • ‘Data Snapshot on Sustainable Development Goals- National Indicator Framework, 2024’
    • Sustainable Development Goals- National Indicator Framework, 2024’

 

National Statistics Day Origin and Significance: 

  • Origin: Designated by the Government of India in 2007 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. 
    • It is celebrated annually.
  • Purpose: It raises awareness about the importance of statistics in national development, strategic planning, economic growth, and policy-making.
  • Significance: Honors Mahalanobis as the father of Modern Statistics in India and recognizes his contributions to statistics and economic planning.

  • It is highly valuable for its applications in multivariate anomaly detection, classification with highly imbalanced datasets, and one-class classification, making it an exceptionally useful metric in these contexts.
