NASA scientists announced that the Parker Solar Probe survived its closest-ever approach to the Sun on December 28, 2024.

  • The spacecraft flew within 3.8 million miles (6.1 million kilometres) of the Sun’s surface. 

How did the Probe survive close to the Sun?

  • A specially designed 4.5-inch-thick carbon-composite heat shield protected the probe, keeping its instruments at a comfortable 29.4°C (85°F) despite the extreme heat.
  • The probe uses a cooling system that circulates a gallon of water through its solar panels to dissipate heat into space.
