Polavaram Project
Context:
The Central Government has released around ₹14,419 crore for the construction of the Polavaram dam after it was designated as a ‘national project’ as per Section 90 of the A.P. Reorganisation Act of 2014.
About Project
- It is a multi-purpose irrigation project on the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh, India.
- Location: Ramayyapeta village of Polavaram Mandal (upstream of Kovvur-Rajahmundry road-cum-rail bridge and Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage).
- Purpose: Multi-purpose project for irrigation, hydropower, and water supply.
Irrigation Potential:
- Gross: 4,36,825 ha (increased intensity to 10.80 lakh acres annually).
- Canals: Left Main Canal (181.999 km) – 4 lakh acres, Right Main Canal (178.81 km) – 3.2 lakh acres.
- Hydropower: 960 MW (12 x 80 MW).
Water Supply:
- Drinking water for 28.5 lakh people in 611 villages.
- 23.44 TMC for industries and drinking water (Visakhapatnam).
- Sharing with other states: Odisha (5 TMC), Chhattisgarh (1.5 TMC).
- Dam: Earth cum Rockfill dam/concrete dam (three gaps), 2454 metres in length.
Other benefits:
- Stabilisation of Godavari and Krishna deltas (10.13 lakh acres + 13 lakh acres)
- Interlinking of Godavari and Krishna rivers (diversion of 80 TMC to Krishna basin)
