Tizu Zunki River Development for Economic Growth
Context: Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) announced development of Tizu Zunki, designated as National Waterways 101 (NW101) along with initiatives to develop the immense tourism potential of Doyang River Lake.
Tizu Zunki River Development for Economic Growth:
- The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and Government of Nagaland to conduct a detailed feasibility study for navigation on NW 101.
- IWAI will provide technical assistance for development of NW 101 for navigation.
- Aim: Enhance cargo and passenger transport thus, boosting economic growth in the region.
- Nagaland Government called the youth to train in maritime skills at Maritime Skill Development Centre.
- This will create job opportunities for the region’s youth while contributing to India’s self-reliance and economic growth.
- Waterways are the most economical, sustainable & efficient mode of transportation.
- Developing Nagaland’s waterways is part of efforts to make Northeast India’s growth engine, leveraging its dynamic waterways for nation-building and economic growth.
- The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) is working to augment efforts for efficient inter-regional connectivity via waterways. For example:
- The Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project aimed at linking multiple national waterways.
- Linkage of NWs like NW 2 (Brahmaputra river) and NW 16 (Barak river)with Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR).
Doyang River Lake Development:
- The Doyang River Lake will be developed to boost tourism potential.
- Community jetties and Ro Pax ferries will be established to facilitate tourism activities.
- It’s famous for being a roosting site of the longest-travelling raptors, Amur Falcons.
- This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the tourism sector in Nagaland.
- It originates on the Japfu Mountain. It is the longest and the biggest river of Nagaland.
- Flows north through the Naga Hills to Wokha district, then turns west to become the Dhansiri River.
- The Dhansiri, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, forms a natural border between Nagaland and Assam.
- Tributaries of Doyang are Chubi River, Nzhu River, Tsui, Tullo and Tishi.
- Doyang Lake: It is a large reservoir created by the Doyang Hydro Electric Project in the Wokha district of western Nagaland.
