International Day of Cooperatives
Context:
Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah addressed the “Sahkar Se Samriddhi” conference on the occasion of the 102nd International Day of Cooperatives.
About International Day of Cooperatives:
- Is an annual celebration of the cooperative movement around the world. It has been observed on the first Saturday of July ever since 1923 by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA).
- ICA is the apex body representing cooperatives, estimated to number around 3 million worldwide. It provides a global voice and forum for knowledge, expertise, and coordinated action for and about cooperatives.
- Theme for the 102nd International Cooperative Day is- “Cooperatives Build a Better Future for All.”
Initiatives under ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’ conference:
- Will launch the scheme for 50% assistance on the purchase of nano-fertilisers by the farmers.
- Shri Shah will also inaugurate the launch of ‘Bharat Organic Atta’ produced by the National Cooperative Organics Limited (NCOL).
- Will distribute Rupay KCC at zero interest rate to women cooperative members in Banaskantha.
- Reviewing the transaction done by the milk producers via RuPay KCC at the Micro-ATMs.
The Conference holds significance with respect to the fact that the year 2025 has been declared as the International Year of Cooperatives (IYC2025) by the United Nations General Assembly last month.
Cooperative societies: According to the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), cooperative societies are autonomous associations of people united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise.
Successful cooperatives in India:
Constitutional Provision: The 97th Constitutional Amendment Act of 2011 gave constitutional status and protection to co-operative societies. In this context, it made the following three changes in the constitution:
