Hydrogen Truck Pilot Project

Hydrogen Truck Pilot Project

Context: Tata Motors, in collaboration with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), will roll out hydrogen-powered trucks using hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICE) on a pilot basis this quarter.

More on News:

  • This initiative supports the National Green Hydrogen Mission and aims to pave the way for green hydrogen adoption in India’s transport sector.
  • At the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, Tata Motors showcased 14 smart commercial vehicles with ADAS and six intelligent solutions for real-time performance insights.
    • They covered all powertrain options: diesel, biodiesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), ethanol, battery electric, and hydrogen ICE.

About the National Green Hydrogen Mission

  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission has a proposed budget allocation of ₹19,744 crore up to 2029-2030.
  • The mission aims to establish India as a global hub for producing, using, and exporting green hydrogen.
  • Government’s Ambitious Goals:
    • 500 GW non-fossil electricity capacity by 2030.
    • Energy independence by 2047.
    • Net Zero emissions by 2070.
  • Key Targets by 2030:
    • Green Hydrogen Production Capacity: Target to develop a production capacity of at least 5 MMT (Million Metric Tonnes) of green hydrogen annually.
    • Renewable Energy Capacity Addition: Associated with the green hydrogen production target, 125 GW of renewable energy capacity will be added to the country’s grid.
    • Total Investments: Over ₹8 lakh crore in total investments in green hydrogen and renewable energy infrastructure.
    • Job Creation: The mission is expected to create over 6 lakh jobs across various sectors, including production, technology, and infrastructure.
    • Reduction in Fossil Fuel Imports: The mission aims to reduce fossil fuel imports by more than ₹1 lakh crore, contributing to India’s energy security.
    • Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction: Expected to abate nearly 50 MMT of annual greenhouse gas emissions, supporting India’s climate commitments and sustainable development goals.
  • Versatile Energy Carrier: Green Hydrogen, produced from renewable energy (RE), is seen as a promising solution to replace fossil fuels in hard-to-abate sectors, supporting India’s clean energy transition.

Pilot Project Details

  • The pilot will run for 12–18 months and will focus on:
    • Testing the hydrogen-powered trucks’ performance.
    • Assessing the requirements for hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.
  • Trial runs will be conducted on Jamshedpur-Kalinganagar, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, and Mumbai-Pune routes.

Tata Prima H.28: India’s First Hydrogen-Powered CV

  • At the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in New Delhi, Tata Motors unveiled the Tata Prima H.28, India’s first commercial vehicle with a four-cylinder H2ICE engine.
  • Features of Tata Prima H.28:
    • Range: 550 kilometers.
    • Significance: Marks a breakthrough in the hydrogen-powered vehicle segment.

Deployment and Refuelling Infrastructure

  • 15 hydrogen-powered trucks will be deployed across the three routes as part of the pilot.
  • Indian Oil Corporation will set up hydrogen refuelling infrastructure at its outlets.
  • The pilot aims to evaluate the practicality of using hydrogen for long-distance trucking.
