Hyderabad Bird Atlas Project

The Hyderabad Bird Atlas project is a significant initiative aimed at mapping bird distribution and monitoring changes in their population across the city.

- Launched on February 3, this three-year project will gather valuable data on both migratory and resident bird species by conducting surveys during the Winter (February) and Summer (July) months.
- The goal is to create a comprehensive resource that will inform authorities about important bird areas and assist with land use planning.
Key Details of the Project
- Purpose: The atlas aims to track the distribution of birds, monitor changes in their population, identify important bird areas, and provide crucial data to authorities for land-use planning.
- Training & Mock-Survey: Prior to the project launch, volunteers were trained in bird identification basics. A mock-survey was conducted at Nehru Zoological Park to familiarise participants with the process.
- Survey Execution: Volunteers were split into small groups (2 to 5 members), each assigned to one of the 180 survey regions across the city.
- Current Progress: As of now, 51 out of the 180 regions have been surveyed, with a total of 170 bird species recorded.
Nehru Zoological Park
- One of the best and well-maintained zoos in Asia.
- Location: Bahadurpura area, enroute Acharya N G Ranga Agricultural University in Rajendranagar, Hyderabad.
- Size: 300-acre site, home to over 1,500 species of birds, animals, and reptiles.
- Animal Species: Includes mynahs, white peacocks, African elephants, chimpanzees, rhinoceros, lions, tigers, panthers, wild oxen, and more.
