Exercise Tiger Triumph-25: Strengthening India-US HADR Cooperation

Context:

The fourth edition of Exercise Tiger Triumph is scheduled from 01 to 13 April 2025 on the Eastern Seaboard of India.

About the Tiger Triumph-25

  • Exercise Tiger Triumph is a bilateral Tri-Service Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Exercise between India and the United States.
  • Aims to enhance interoperability and develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for coordinated HADR operations.

Objectives of the Exercise

  • Enhancing coordination between Indian and US Joint Task Forces (JTF).
  • Establishing a Combined Coordination Center (CCC) for efficient HADR operations.
  • Strengthening interoperability between both nations’ armed forces.
  • Facilitating real-time operational synergy during humanitarian crises.
  • Conducting joint medical assistance operations for disaster-affected communities.

Participating Forces

  • Indian Contingent
    • Indian Navy: INS Jalashwa, Gharial, Mumbai, and Shakti with integral helicopters and landing crafts.
    • Indian Air Force (IAF): C-130 aircraft and MI-17 helicopters.
    • Indian Army: 91 Infantry Brigade and 12 Mechanised Infantry Battalion.
    • Medical Unit: Rapid Action Medical Team (RAMT) for emergency response.
  • US Contingent
  • US Navy Ships: Comstock and Ralph Johnson.
  • US Marine Division troops embarked on these vessels.
  • US Navy medical team for joint humanitarian operations.

Phases of Exercise

  • Harbour Phase (01 to 07 April 2025) – Visakhapatnam
    • Opening Ceremony with a joint Flag Parade and Media Interaction on 01 April 2025 onboard INS Jalashwa.
    • Training Visits and Subject Matter Expert Exchanges between Indian and US forces.
    • Sports Events and Social Interactions to foster camaraderie.
    • Preparation and mission planning for the upcoming Sea Phase.
  • Sea Phase (Post 07 April 2025) – Off Kakinada
    • Deployment of ships and troops for real-time operational drills.
    • Maritime and Amphibious operations to enhance joint operational readiness.
    • HADR operations in simulated disaster-affected zones.

Strategic Significance of Tiger Triumph

  • Reinforces India-US Defense Partnership under the Indo-Pacific strategy.
  • Enhances joint operational capabilities in humanitarian crisis management.
  • Promotes multilateral disaster relief preparedness in the Indian Ocean region.
  • Serves as a platform for future joint military engagements and crisis response missions.

  • Establishment of a Joint Command and Control Center by Indian Army and US Marines at Kakinada Naval Enclave.
  • Medical camp set up by IAF RAMT and US Navy medical team for disaster relief assistance.

Closing Ceremony

  • The exercise will culminate with a Closing Ceremony onboard US Navy Ship Comstock on 13 April 2025 at Visakhapatnam.
  • Strengthens India-US defense cooperation in HADR operations.
