A village on the southern coast of Iran may have experienced dangerously high temperatures this week, with the weather station at Dayrestan Airport recording a heat index of 82.2°C on August 28.

  • Geography: Iran is a mountainous and arid country in southwestern Asia with diverse ethnicities. It features a central desert plateau surrounded by high mountain ranges that provide access through passes.
  • Capital & Major Cities: The capital, Tehran, is located at the southern foot of the Elburz Mountains
      • Other major cities like Isfahan and Shiraz are important centres of education, culture, and commerce, blending modern infrastructure with historical landmarks.
  • Borders: Iran shares borders with Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, the Caspian Sea (north), Pakistan, Afghanistan (east), the Persian Gulf, and the Gulf of Oman (south), and Turkey and Iraq (west). 
  • Mountain Ranges & Plateaus: Iran’s interior is a high basin surrounded by eroded mountain ranges like the Zagros and Elburz Mountains
      • The highest peak, Mount Damāvand, stands at 18,605 feet (5,671 metres).
  • Deserts & Drainage: The interior plateau features the Kavīr and Lūt deserts. 
      • The country has a few large rivers, with the Kārūn River being the only navigable one
      • Other rivers, like the Sefīd and Zāyandeh, are important for irrigation and hydroelectric power. 
      • The largest inland body of water is Lake Urmia.
