Two Russian Stealth Frigates for the Indian Navy Launched
Context:
- The Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) recently launched the first indigenous Advanced P1135.6 Frigate named “Triput” for the Indian Navy.
- These frigates are part of a contract India signed with Russia in October 2016, which includes four frigates—two to be built in Russia and two at GSL.
Key Highlights:
- The first ship, Tushil, from Russia, is set to join the Indian Navy in September 2024, while the second ship, Tamal, is expected by February 2025.
- In November 2018, GSL signed a $500 million deal with Rosoboronexport of Russia for materials, design, and specialist assistance to locally manufacture two frigates.
- The contract was officially signed between the Indian Defence Ministry and GSL in January 2019.
- According to the schedule, GSL is set to deliver the first ship to the Navy in 2026 and the second one six months later. These four frigates are a follow-up to the six Teg and Talwar class ships previously acquired from Russia.
