NCTE Organises Orientation Sessions on NMM and NPST for PM SHRI School teachers
Context:
National Council for Teacher Education, conducted a five-day virtual orientation program on the National Mission for Mentoring (NMM) and the National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST) for teachers of PM SHRI schools.

- Programme conducted under the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), Ministry of Education, Government of India,
- Teachers from 29 States/UTs/KVS/NVS across the country covering more than 1 lakh teachers.
- Objectives included capacity building of PM SHRI school teachers to effectively implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
- The program aimed to provide insights into NMM and NPST, supporting teachers’ professional growth and fostering a strong foundation for their students.
- Sign language interpreters were employed to ensure inclusivity during the sessions.
National Mission for Mentoring (NMM):
- Mentoring is a process for the informal/formal transmission of knowledge and the psychosocial support perceived by the recipient as relevant to work, career or professional development.
- It gives rise to a collaborative agency for stakeholders where the community fosters the spirit of learning, reflection and sharing toward capacity building.
- A “Bluebook on Mentoring” is being prepared by NCTE.
- Purpose: Enhance understanding and skills necessary for effective mentoring under NMM.
- Session Focus: Detailed presentation on NMM, including technical demonstrations of the NMM portal for mentors and mentees.
National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST):
- NPST is a public statement of what constitutes teacher quality. It defines the work of teachers and makes explicit elements of high-quality, effective teaching in 21st century schools that will improve educational outcomes for students.
- It seeks to fulfil NEP 2020’s objectives of ensuring that all students have equitable access to the best possible education.
- Empower PM SHRI school teachers with performance expectations and improvement strategies outlined in NPST.
- Session Focus: Understanding three core standards, teacher levels, and the NPST framework for in-service teacher capacity building.
- Equip teachers with competencies to achieve professional and personal goals.
