Gumti River

Context:

The Ministry of External Affairs recently stated that the floods in eight districts of Bangladesh were caused by heavy rainfall, not by the release of water from the dam on the Gumti river in Tripura.

  • This statement follows criticism from Bangladesh, which alleged that the sudden floods were caused by the opening of sluice gates at the Tripura dam. 
  • The statement also mentioned that the Dumbur dam is located 120 kilometres upstream from the Bangladeshi border and stands at a modest height of 30 metres. 
  • The dam is primarily used for power generation, supplying 40 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh.

  • The Gumti River, also known as the Gomti or Gumati, is a significant river flowing through the northeastern Indian state of Tripura and extending into Bangladesh
  • Geographic and Physical Characteristics:
    • Source: The Gumti River originates from Dumour Lake in Tripura, India.
    • Length: It spans approximately 150 kilometres (about 93 miles) in total length, with a portion of its course flowing through Bangladesh.
    • Mouth: The river eventually merges into the Meghna River.
    • Terrain: The upper course of the river flows through hilly terrain, while the lower course traverses fertile plains, supporting diverse flora and fauna.
