Green World Awards 2024
Context:
Coal India Limited (CIL), under the aegis of the Ministry of Coal, has been honoured with the prestigious Green World Environment Award 2024 in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) category.

- CIL was also honoured with the title of Green World Ambassador for its outstanding CSR initiatives.
- The award ceremony took place at The Orangery, Kensington Palace, London on November 18, 2024.
Recognition for Exemplary CSR Efforts:
- The Green World Awards are prestigious international awards presented by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-profit group dedicated to recognising and promoting environmental best practices and CSR initiatives worldwide.
- CIL received this esteemed recognition for its outstanding work in the field of CSR, particularly for the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojna.
- This initiative provides permanent curative treatment for over 600 Thalassemia patients through stem cell transplants, also known as Bone Marrow Transplants (BMT).
Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojna:
- It is a government initiative in India aimed at providing comprehensive care and support for children suffering from thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder.
- In 2017, CIL became the first Public Sector Undertaking to initiate a CSR project for curative Thalassemia treatment via BMT across India.
- The project provides financial assistance up to Rs. 10 lakh for BMT, benefiting patients nationwide.
- 17 prominent hospitals in India are partnering with CIL for this initiative.
Coal India Limited (CIL) Role:
- CIL is one of the largest CSR spenders in India and plays a significant role in the country’s social development.
- Apart from its primary role as an energy provider, CIL contributes significantly to health, education, and community welfare.
- CIL produces over 80% of India’s coal and contributes to 70% of the total coal-based power generation in the country.
- The company supports 55% of total power generation and meets 40% of the country’s primary commercial energy needs.
- Environmental Initiatives: CIL has taken steps to improve the environment, such as:
- Expanding green cover in mined-out areas.
- Developing eco-parks and tourism spots.
- Providing mine water for domestic and agricultural use to millions of villagers.
