Krishi Sakhis

Context:

The Prime Minister will soon grant certificates to over 30,000 self-help groups, empowering them as Krishi Sakhis.

 

More on News:

  • Realising the significant role & contribution of women in agriculture and to further enhancing the skills of rural women, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (MoA&FW)  and the Ministry of Rural Development signed a MoU in 2023.
  • The Krishi Sakhi Convergence Program (KSCP) is the ambitious initiative under this MoU.

About Krishi Sakhi: 

  • Krishi Sakhis are the practising farmers and trained para extension professional in agriculture at grass root level. 
  • As part of the “Krishi Sakhi Yojana“, Krishi Sakhis are being positioned as trusted advisors and resources for farmers, providing them with essential information, skills, and expertise to adopt natural farming practices and improve soil health.

About Krishi Sakhi Convergence Program (KSCP):

  • Aim: It aims to transform rural India through the empowerment of rural women as Krishi Sakhi, by imparting training and certification of Krishi Sakhis as Para-extension Workers.
    • Krishi Sakhis are chosen as agriculture para-extension workers because they are trusted community resource persons and experienced farmers themselves.
    • Their deep roots in farming communities ensure they are welcomed and respected.
  • This certification course aligns with the objectives of the “Lakhpati Didi” Program.
    • Under the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ program, the aim is to create 3 crore Lakhpati Didis, one dimension of which is Krishi Sakhi.
  • Training under the programme includes:
    • Agro-Ecological Practices from land preparation to harvest
    • Organising Farmer Field schools
    • Seed banks + Establishment and Management
    • Soil health, soil and moisture conservation practices
    • Integrated Farming Systems
    • Basics of Livestock Management
    • Preparation and use of Bio inputs and establishment of Bio inputs shops
    • Basic communication skills
  • Following the training, Krishi Sakhis will take a proficiency test. 
    • Those who qualify will be certified as Para-extension Workers, enabling them to undertake employment under the MoA&FW on the fixed resource fees.
  • Coverage: Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Odisha, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, and Meghalaya.

Lakhpati Didi Program:

  • Ministry: Ministry of Rural Development
  • It is a skill Training programme for women.
  • Aim: To catalyse economic empowerment and financial independence among women in rural areas. 
  • A Lakhpati Didi is a Self-Help Group member who earns an annual household income of Rupees One Lakh (₹1,00,000) or more.
  • The mission seeks to achieve its objective through investing in four core components: 
    • social mobilisation and promotion and strengthening of self-managed and financially sustainable community institutions of the rural poor
    • financial inclusion of the rural poor
    • sustainable livelihoods
    • social inclusion, social development, and convergence
