Context:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi transferred ₹22,000 crore into the bank accounts of 9.8 crore farmers under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme during an event in Bhagalpur, Bihar, on February 24, 2025. This marks the 19th instalment of the scheme.
PM-KISAN Overview
- The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) is a Central Sector scheme with 100% funding from the Government of India.
- The scheme became operational on December 1, 2018, and aims to provide income support of ₹6,000 per year to eligible farmers.
- Objective: The scheme has been instrumental in improving the livelihoods of farmers by reducing their dependence on loans and enabling them to invest in better agricultural practices.
Key Features
- Financial Assistance: Eligible farmers receive ₹6,000 per year, distributed in three equal instalments of ₹2,000 every four months.
- Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT): The funds are directly transferred to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
- Eligibility: The scheme is available to small and marginal farmers who own cultivable land. The beneficiaries must complete the e-KYC process to receive the instalments.
- Identification of Beneficiaries: The State Government and UT administration are responsible for identifying eligible farmer families as per scheme guidelines.
