Rash Behari Ghosh
Rash Behari Ghosh, born on December 23, 1845, in Torkona village, West Bengal, was a prominent Indian politician, lawyer, social worker, and philanthropist. He played a significant role in the Indian National Congress and was known for his moderate approach to India’s struggle for independence.
Early Life and Education:
- Ghosh received his education at Burdwan Raj Collegiate School and later at Presidency College in Kolkata, where he graduated in 1865.
- He earned his MA in English with first-class honours, becoming the first Indian to achieve this distinction.
- Subsequently, he obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1867 and later a Doctor of Laws degree in 1871.
- Ghosh also held the prestigious Tagore Law Chair at Calcutta University in 1875.
Contributions to the Freedom Movement:
- Rash Behari Ghosh was an active member of the Indian National Congress and succeeded Dadabhai Naoroji as its president during two sessions: Surat in 1907 and Madras in 1908.
- His leadership was marked by a commitment to constitutional reforms and social justice. He was also a member of the Bengal Legislative Council and the Secretary of State’s Council of India, where he contributed to significant legislative changes.
Advocacy for Education and Social Reforms:
- Ghosh was a strong advocate for education and played a crucial role in establishing the National Council of Education at Jadavpur, contributing financially to its foundation.
- His philanthropic efforts were aimed at improving educational opportunities for Indians during British rule.
- He supported the Swadeshi movement, emphasising the need for self-reliance and development of indigenous industries as a means to resist colonial exploitation.
Recognition:
- For his contributions, Ghosh was honoured with titles such as Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) in 1896 and Companion of the Order of the Star of India (CSI) in 1909. He was knighted in 1915 for his services.
