Context:

The World Food Programme (WFP) and the Government of Odisha have launched India’s first 24/7 grain dispensing machine, named ‘Annapurti’.

  • Odisha has become the first state in India to provide access to the public distribution system beneficiaries 24 hours a day.
  • The ATMs will be set up across the state to provide food grains to beneficiaries with 24/7 access under the National Food Security Act.
  • Universal Access: Anyone with a Public Distribution System ration card valid in India, regardless of the State and Union Territory, can access their entitlement.
  • Efficiency: The Grain ATM can dispense up to 50 kg of grains in five minutes with a 99.99% accuracy rate.
  • Biometric Authentication: Ensures consistent access to full food rations.
  • Modular Design: This can be easily assembled and is energy efficient, with options for solar panel connection.
