Enzyme Manufacturing

Context:

A few days after the Central Government launched its BioE3 policy to enhance biotechnology-driven manufacturing in India, the Department of Biotechnology is considering establishing enzyme-manufacturing facilities to support ethanol production.

BioE3 Policy

The Union Cabinet approved the ‘BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, and Employment) Policy for Fostering High-Performance Biomanufacturing’ proposed by the Department of Biotechnology.

Key Features:

  • Innovation-Driven Support: Establishment of Biomanufacturing & Bio-AI hubs and Biofoundries is planned.
  • Focus on Green Growth: The policy prioritises regenerative bioeconomy models to support green growth, expanding India’s skilled workforce and creating jobs.
  • Government Initiatives Alignment: The policy aligns with existing government initiatives such as the ‘Net Zero’ carbon economy and ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ (LiFE).

More on news

  • The first enzyme-manufacturing plant under the new BioE3 policy may be established in Manesar, Haryana.
  • NITI Aayog estimates that India will require around 13.5 billion litres of ethanol annually by 2025–26, with approximately 10.16 billion litres needed to meet the E20 fuel-blending mandate.

Enzyme manufacturing

  • It is a critical aspect of biotechnology, involving the production of enzymes for various industrial applications
  • Definition: Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions. They are essential in various industries, including food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, biofuels, and environmental remediation.
  • Production Methods: Enzymes are primarily produced using microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and yeast, through controlled fermentation processes
  • Establishing enzyme-manufacturing facilities:
      • The enzymes are developed through genetic modification of Penicillium funiculosum, a fungus sourced from rice stubble and soil.
      • These enzymes efficiently hydrolyse organic waste, including rice stubble.
