The Indian President concluded her three-nation visit to Fiji, New Zealand, and Timor-Leste on August 11, 2024, aimed at strengthening India’s relationships with these countries.

About Timor Leste:

  • It also known as East Timor, is a Southeast Asian country located on the eastern half of the island of Timor. 
  • Only Asian Nation to be completely located in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • Official Name: Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste
  • Form of Government: Semi-presidential republic
  • Capital: Dili 
  • Official Languages: Tetun, Portuguese
  • Location: It shares the island of Timor with West Timor of Indonesia. 
  • Includes Atauro and Jaco islands, and the enclave of Ambeno on the northwestern coast of Timor.
  • It is bounded by the Wetar Strait in the north and the Ombai Strait in the northwest.
  • Major Mountain Ranges: Foho Tatamailau (2,963 m) is the highest peak.
  • Rivers: Include the Lakla, Lies, and Seical, which have carved deep gorges.
  • It is surrounded by coral reefs rich in marine life.
  • Natural Resources: Petroleum, natural gas, timber gold, manganese, and marble.
  • Climate: Its tropical climate is heavily influenced by the West Pacific Monsoon and its mountainous climate.
  • History: In the capital city of Dili, landmarks reflect Timor-Leste’s struggle for independence from Portugal in 1975 and from Indonesia in 2002. 
  • Notably, the 27-metre-tall Cristo Rei de Dili statue stands on a hilltop overlooking the city, offering expansive views of the bay.
