  • The United Arab Emirates (UAE), also known as the Emirates, is a country in West Asia strategically located near the Strait of Hormuz, at the eastern end of the Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East.
  • The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and the Omani Musandam Peninsula, is a narrow waterway that links the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman.
  • It is a federal elective monarchy made up of seven emirates, with Abu Dhabi as its capital.
  • The Tropic of Cancer passes through the UAE, specifically in the Abu Dhabi emirate.
  • The UAE shares land borders with Oman to the east and northwest and with Saudi Arabia to the southwest. 
  • It has maritime borders in the Persian Gulf, including Qatar, Iran, and Oman.
  • Its terrain includes salt pans, oases like Liwa and Al-Buraimi, and the desert merging into Saudi Arabia’s Rub al-Khali.
  • The UAE contains several ecoregions, including Al Hajar montane woodlands and the Gulf of Oman desert.
  • The country’s highest point is Jebel Jais mountain.
  • The UAE has the most diversified economy among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members, shifting its focus from oil and gas to tourism and business in the 21st century.
  • The UAE is considered a middle power and is a member of international organisations such as the UN, Arab League, OPEC, and BRICS.
