About Kavli Prize:

  • Fred Kavli, a Norwegian-American Scientist, businessman and philanthropist, founded the Kavli Foundation in 2000 with proceeds from selling his company, Kavlico.
  • The Kavli Prizes are awarded in three areas: astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience — the largest, the smallest, and the most complex.
  • Established in 2008.
  • $1 million cash prize per field, along with a scroll and a 7 cm diameter medal.
  • Given in collaboration with the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research.

Do you Know?

  • The Kavli Prize was designed to be similar to the Nobel in the fields of astrophysics, neuroscience, and nanoscience but is more far-reaching in its outlook.
  • Unlike the Nobel Prize, which is awarded for achievements made “during the preceding year” as per Alfred Nobel’s will, the Kavli Prize does not operate under such a restriction.
  • Ten of the Kavli Prize recipients have subsequently won the Nobel Prize.
