Context:

India is providing humanitarian aid to Cuba through a shipment of approximately 90 tonnes of nine different Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) made in India.

 

More on news:

  • Cuban drug manufacturers will use these APIs to produce essential antibiotics in various forms, including tablets, capsules, syrups, and injections, to treat chronic communicable diseases.
  • The Indian government stated that this assistance highlights India’s role as the “Pharmacy of the World” and emphasises the longstanding friendship with Cuba.

About Cuba:

  • Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean Sea, nicknamed “Pearl of the Antilles.”
    • Cuba and its neighbours form the Greater Antilles, a chain of islands created millions of years ago when two of Earth’s tectonic plates collided. 
  • Borders: the Atlantic Ocean to the north and east, the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and the Caribbean Sea to the south.
  • Havana (La Habana) is the major city and serves as the capital 
  • Other significant cities: Santiago, Camagüey, Holguín, and Trinidad.
  • Topography:Mostly flat, with mountains in the southeast.
    • The highest point on the island is Pico Turquino, in the Sierra Maestra Mountain Range. 
    • The River Cauto is the largest river. It flows from Sierra Maestra into the Gulf of Guacanayabo.
  • Governed by a communist state, the president serves as both chief of state and head of government.
  • Spain retained control of Cuba until 1898,
    • Defeated by the United States and Cuban forces in the Spanish-American War.
