South Africa’s new coalition government has brought a Black president and a white opposition leader together in an image of unity.

About South Africa

Features of the Indian Constitution borrowed from the South African Constitution

  • Procedure for Amending the Constitution:  The provision for amendment of the Constitution of India under Article 368 accommodates this requirement. It requires a two-thirds majority vote in both houses of parliament. This approach was adopted by the Indian Constitution, ensuring a balance between stability and the need for change.
  • Election of Members to the Rajya Sabha (Upper House in India): A model for electing members to the upper house (Senate) based on proportional representation. This system wasn’t directly copied, but it influenced the design of India’s Rajya Sabha elections, where state legislatures elect members.
