Context: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron inaugurated the ‘Bharat Innovates 2026’ event in Nice and addressing the gathering, Macron called for deeper cooperation with India to build a “cooperative AI.”

What is Cooperative AI?

Cooperative AI is an emerging field that focuses on improving the ability of artificial intelligence systems to work together effectively for the benefit of all.
It addresses the challenges posed by multi‑agent interactions in AI systems, ensuring that autonomous entities can collaborate rather than compete in a manner aligned with human values and ethical principles.
In its broadest sense, cooperative AI refers to artificial intelligence designed not merely to operate in isolation, but to foster mutual benefit and shared objectives. It emphasises:
Human‑AI collaboration: Systems that enhance human abilities rather than replace them, learning from human expertise to improve outcomes.
Multi‑agent cooperation: The ability of multiple AI systems to work toward a common goal, share knowledge, and engage in joint problem‑solving.
